Taurine is an amino acid, which is not used in protein synthesis, but is found free in most tissues.
Taurine helps move potassium, magnesium and sodium, components that are key to brain and heart function. It is known as an enhancer of neurotransmitters and protects the brain. Studies have shown that it strengthens the myocardium and therefore helps prevent heart failure and arrhythmias.
One study showed that taurine deficiency leads to a decrease in nitric oxide production, which causes a decrease in blood flow (and oxygen) to the muscles.
Taurine is also important for the metabolism of body fat. It is a key component of bile, essential for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and for the regulation of serum cholesterol levels, while it is related to the regulation of insulin in the body. Studies have shown that it protects the eyes from reducing the oxidative damage of sunlight and stimulates the body's immune system. It has also been suggested as a possible treatment for epilepsy, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, alcoholism, cystic fibrosis and Alzheimer's disease.
