5-HTP is an extract of the bean of an African plant (Griffonia simplicifolia), and acts as an intermediate metabolite between the amino acid L-tryptophan (tryptophan) and the neurotransmitter Serotonin (serotonin). Tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP, which in turn is converted to serotonin.
Both L-tryptophan and 5-HTP raise serotonin levels in the brain.
