One of the necessary conditions for the proper functioning of our body is the balance between acidity and alkalinity in the blood and other body fluids. It seems that disturbing this balance with the accumulation of many acids in the body leads to diseases such as osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout.
For example, chronic consumption of acid-forming foods forces bones to produce alkaline-reacting minerals (calcium, magnesium) to neutralize acids and maintain an acid-alkaline balance. This demineralization of the bones leads to osteoporosis. Since our blood should be slightly alkaline (pH 7.38 - 7.42), we should consume more alkaline than acidic foods.
Unfortunately, the opposite is usually the case. Alkaline foods are generally vegetables and fruits, while meat, fish and cereals are acidic. Note: A sour food does not mean that it is acidic (ie it gives an acidic reaction), because what counts is the final product of the metabolic process. So, for example, lemon and other citrus fruits, although sour because of the citric acid they contain, are actually alkaline, because the weak citric acid forms citrates during digestion that give an alkaline reaction.
In contrast, sour cranberry is one of the few fruits that is acidic.
