Dietary selenium intake in the United Kingdom during the 1970s was double that of today. Official statistics also show that selenium intake in 80% of the general population in the UK is lower than recommended.
This is due in part to the reduction in imports of selenium-rich wheat (widely used in bread making in North America), combined with both the widespread use of selenium-rich fertilizers and the exposure of cereals to acid rain.
