Evening Primrose Oil is one of the few natural sources of a polyunsaturated fatty acid called G-linoleic acid (GLA). GLA is the precursor of a particularly important prostaglandin of PGE1, which is involved in the regulation of the function of the nervous, cardiovascular and reproductive systems, skin health and a variety of other biological functions.
Although the body can produce GLA from linoleic acid (the omega 6 fatty acid found in vegetable oils) this conversion is often slowed down or even completely inhibited. For this reason, a dietary source of GLA can be useful for the body to bypass the conversion process, which is confirmed by several clinical studies that have shown the benefit of taking GLA supplements in specific cases.
