For more than a century, the name NUTRICIA has been synonymous with infant and toddler nutrition.

It all started in 1896, when Professor Backhaus, in Göttingen, Germany, first prepared milk with a composition inspired by mother's milk. This first "baby" milk became available to all families through NUTRICIA.

Starting from that first factory in 1896, NUTRICIA has charted an impressive course of product development, and is always one step ahead, taking care of children in every corner of the world to this day.

The Nutricia Research Center has been dedicated for more than 50 years to the scientific study of early life nutrition for mothers and young children. This research is based on the miracle of human breast milk, which has an impressively complex composition that constantly evolves as the infant develops to provide optimal nutrition at each stage of new life. The nutrients naturally present in a mother's milk support physical and mental development and affect both the short-term and long-term health of her child.

The Nutricia Research Center invests in the research and development of the relationship between specific nutrients and the healthy development of children, from the pre-conception stage through all stages of pregnancy and into the early years of childhood. This led to one of the most important revolutionary innovations in early life nutrition:
in 1994 the Nutricia Research Center team was the first to detect long- and short-chain oligosaccharides in breast milk, which have been shown to promote the growth of beneficial gut microflora and the development of the immune system.
