CALCIUM

Calcium is the most abundant element in the human body. 99% of this amount is found in the bones and teeth, but the remaining 1% that is distributed in the nerves, muscles and blood plays a very important role in the function of nerves, muscles and heart, blood clotting, health of blood vessels, in the storage and release of hormones.

According to recent research, calcium appears to reduce high blood pressure and minimize bone loss from postmenopausal women's bones. In addition, the presence of enough calcium in the body protects bones and teeth from the accumulation of lead, a very toxic metal. Taking calcium along with vitamin D seems to reduce the risk of colon and rectal cancer.

Vegetarians, if they do not consume milk and dairy products, may suffer from low calcium levels, not only because they lack a rich source of the metal, but also because their diet is usually rich in acids (vegetable, oxalic) that combine with the calcium and reduce its absorption.

People who avoid milk and dairy products due to lactase deficiency and the consequent intolerance are at risk of calcium deficiency if they do not eat calcium-rich foods or take calcium supplements.

Not all age groups absorb the calcium in foods as well. Infants have the highest absorption (60%), while in the elderly the rate of absorption decreases dramatically.

PROBLEM - RECOMMENDED DOSAGE:

Broken / cracked bones: 1000-2000 mg

High pressure: 1000-1500 mg

Osteoporosis: 1000-2000 mg

MAGNESIUM

Magnesium (as well as phosphorus and calcium) is essential for bone and tooth health, while, together with calcium, they regulate muscle activity: magnesium is a muscle relaxant, while calcium is a muscle stimulant.

Magnesium is essential for the metabolism and synthesis of proteins, for the activation of large numbers of enzymes and for the passage of sodium and potassium through cell membranes.

Adequate levels of magnesium in the blood protect the cardiovascular system and protect against heart arrhythmias and, possibly, strokes.

Taken as a supplement, magnesium can help with insomnia, premenstrual syndrome, cramps, and cardiovascular problems such as hypertension or angina due to coronary artery spasms.

According to prominent American cardiologists, magnesium also:

helps the heart push more blood into the arteries without the need for extra oxygen. Loosens the constricted blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more freely. Prevents platelet aggregation, thus reducing the chances of blood clots forming and clogging arteries.

lowers bad (LDL) and increases good (HDL) cholesterol.

Magnesium supplements help type II (non-insulin dependent) diabetics to regulate their blood sugar more easily, allowing antidiabetic drugs to be reduced and, in some cases, stopped (this should be done in consultation with your doctor). In type I diabetics, magnesium is much less effective.

Magnesium strengthens tooth enamel, while it is important for bone density and the treatment of osteoporosis. Without a sufficient amount of magnesium, not even a sufficient amount of calcium can be retained in the bones, which thus become more fragile and prone to osteoporosis. Magnesium, on the other hand, keeps calcium in dissolution, preventing it from settling on arteries and forming kidney and bile stones.

Magnesium, finally, helps to improve the quality of sleep, while reducing the tendency of some people to rub (grind) their teeth during sleep.

Below are some cases and daily doses of magnesium used by American doctors:

Angina: 500 - 1000 mg

High pressure: 500 - 750 mg

Boneporosity: 500 - 1000 mg

Use of contraceptives: 500 - 750 mg

OBSERVATIONS: A large number of people suffer from magnesium deficiency or are at risk of such a deficiency. These include people with gastrointestinal disorders (eg Crohn's disease), people with prolonged or severe stress, diabetics, alcoholics, and users of a significant number of medications, such as diuretics and antibiotics, especially contraceptives. This seems to be the reason why women who take the "pill" have higher rates of blood clots, as magnesium deficiency promotes platelet aggregation and blood clot formation.

Magnesium deficiency is one of the main causes of many cardiovascular diseases, and in many cases other pathological conditions, such as depression, insomnia, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue, premature birth, eclampsia.

Because magnesium has antacid properties it is best not to take it after meals, unless the acidity of gastric juices is increased. It should be noted that many antacids contain magnesium salts.

According to many experts it is best to take magnesium with calcium, in a ratio that is usually 1 to 2 (one part magnesium to two parts calcium).

VITAMIN D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin essential for bone and tooth health.

Promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestine and their deposition in the bones (plating). It contributes to the proper functioning of the immune and nervous systems and helps prevent various chronic and autoimmune diseases.

It is especially important in infancy and childhood, as it contributes to proper and healthy skeletal development. The basic forms of vitamin D are D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol), which are contained in only a few foods (fatty fish, milk, eggs, liver, etc.).
